The most common forms of sedation used in dentistry are inhaled, oral, and intravenous sedation. While sedation dentistry makes the procedure more tolerable for you, it is important to understand that they are not painkillers, and you will still require the use of dental anesthetic.

Patient Instructions

Pre-Sedation Instructions

‍To ensure your safety and the effectiveness of IV sedation, Lesueur Family Dental provides the following pre-sedation instructions:
‍
- Fasting: Refrain from eating or drinking (including water) for at least 6 hours before your appointment.
- Medications: Inform us of all medications and supplements you are taking. Some may need to be adjusted or avoided before sedation.
- Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment, with sleeves that can be easily rolled up to allow access for the IV.
- Transportation: Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from your appointment, as you will not be able to drive after sedation.
- Health Changes: Notify us if there are any changes in your health or if you develop symptoms like a cold or fever before your procedure.

‍Post-Sedation Instructions

After undergoing a procedure with IV sedation, follow these post-sedation instructions for a smooth recovery:

- Rest: Plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Avoid strenuous activities and make no important decisions for 24 hours.
- Diet: Start with clear liquids and gradually progress to more solid foods as you feel comfortable. Avoid hot beverages until the numbness wears off.
- Medications: Take any prescribed medications as directed. Avoid alcohol and other sedatives unless approved by Dr. Leseuer.
- Observation: Have someone stay with you for a few hours after returning home to ensure your safety.
- Side Effects: Mild nausea or drowsiness is normal. Contact us if you experience prolonged or severe symptoms.
